What's New for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator?

It has been a long time coming, but Jeep is finally designing a pickup truck again. It has been over 30 years since the discontinued Jeep Commanche pickup truck was built. The 2020 Jeep Gladiator pickup truck will be based on the Jeep Wrangler platform. The Gladiator will be available in two trim levels: The base Sport, Rubicon, and Overland. The Gladiator provides improved stability over previous Jeep models which makes for a more comfortable ride. The wheelbase is over 36 inches longer than the two-door Wrangler and more than 18 inches longer than the four-door model. The extended wheelbase of the Gladiator gives it the best ride quality of any solid axle Jeep past or present. All trims feature an electric-assist hydraulic steering system that feels naturally weighted and has excellent responsiveness. The steering also does not have a slightly off-center feel that is noticeable on many vehicles. The brakes are firm and smooth and provide confident stopping power.

An easy way to identify the different trims is that the Rubicon has a faux-scooped hood, while the Overland has a sleek hood. The Overland also has a grille that features silver touches in the slots, silver badges, and unique wheels. Both the Rubicon and Overland come with 18-inch wheels, fender flares, and hardtops that are either black or color-coded. The Sport trims are available with only black fender flares and 17-inch rims. All trims will come with a powerful 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar engine that pumps out about 305 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. A smooth shifting six-speed manual gearbox comes standard while an eight-speed automatic transmission is optional. The automatic is rated at 17 mpg city/22 hwy, while the manual gets 16 mpg city/23 hwy. A diesel engine that will be only available with the automatic transmission is expected at a later date. For its class, the Gladiator has outstanding towing capabilities. Trims with a manual gearbox have a maximum tow rating of 4000 lbs. With the optional automatic and 4.10 gearing, the Sport trim can tow up to 7,650 lbs and the Rubicon is rated at 7,000 lbs.

The Rubicon was designed with an off-road focus and featured a 4:1 low range transfer case, an electronic-disconnect front sway bar, Fox monotube shocks, and front and rear electronic locking differentials. Like traditional Jeep Wranglers, all Gladiators have removable tops and doors. As a significant throwback option, the windshield can also be folded down. The interior is well laid out and has an upscale look and feel. The cabin is very roomy and has two rows of seats. Some standard features include a Uconnect 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth, eight-speaker audio system, and two USB ports. Optional equipment consists of a Bluetooth speaker that is portable and waterproof, a forward-facing off-road camera, additional USB ports, an upgraded 7.0 or 8.4-inch touchscreen display, smartphone integration for Apple and Android, a premium Alpine nine-speaker audio system, GPS navigation, and satellite radio.
